This week, we had a Cake-Off team building challenge for the fantastic team at TAFE Queensland, and it quickly turned into a colourful, creative, and collaborative experience.
But this wasn’t just about baking cakes. The challenge for each team was to bring TAFE Queensland’s four core values to life through cake design.
Teams were given a range of cake decorating tools, ingredients, colours, and materials before being tasked with transforming simple sponge cakes into edible representations of their organisation’s values.
This meant more than just icing a cake.
Teams had to:
Brainstorm ideas together
Decide how to visually represent each value
Allocate roles within their group
Work against the clock to execute their design
From colourful icing and creative shapes to clever symbolism, each team approached the challenge in a different way.
What made the activity truly special was how quickly teams leaned into collaboration and problem-solving.
Just like in the workplace, success depended on:
Communication
Creativity
Team coordination
Shared ownership of the final result
Some participants focused on decorating, others on planning the design, while others ensured the cake structure held together as the masterpiece came to life.
By the end of the session, the room was filled with laughter, colour, and some impressive cake creations.
Each cake told a story — a visual representation of the values that guide the TAFE Queensland team every day.
The judging was tough, but the real winner was the team spirit and creativity on display throughout the challenge.
It was fantastic to see the TAFE Queensland team embrace the activity with so much enthusiasm and pride.
A great reminder that when teams work together toward a common goal, they can create something truly memorable — and sometimes delicious too.
